Furniture Care
Refreshing the interior of an apartment, house, or office is always enjoyable. A new environment uplifts the mood and provides a dose of positive feelings. However, there is a caveat to consider: soft furniture requires special care, otherwise, it will quickly lose its luster and become more of a hassle than a source of joy. But by following the tips below, you can avoid the negative consequences.
Proper Care for Upholstered Furniture
One of the most common types of soft furniture is the sofa. It’s present in practically every apartment or office and comes with a range of advantages that can be negated if not properly cared for.
Dust Removal
One of the most common and unpleasant problems with soft furniture is dust, especially concerning items with fabric upholstery. Seeping through the fabric, dust gets absorbed by the filler and then, during use, is released into the air, which can cause discomfort. That’s why soft furniture with fabric upholstery is often not recommended for allergy sufferers. Furthermore, accumulated dust can significantly tarnish the appearance of a sofa, distorting its color and giving even a new item the appearance of “grandma’s legacy.” To avoid such unpleasantness, it’s necessary to fight dust in a timely manner. First, regular wet cleaning of the room should be conducted to prevent dust buildup in the air. Secondly, upholstered furniture with fabric upholstery should be regularly and thoroughly vacuumed. If a vacuum cleaner is not available or the upholstery is made of leather or faux leather, simply wiping them with a damp cloth will suffice.
Stain Cleaning
Stains are truly an “unpleasant nuisance,” especially when it comes to sofas with fabric upholstery. Firstly, they can completely ruin the charm of a new sofa or armchair. Even a small, initially inconspicuous stain can greatly affect one’s mood. If soaking and then washing the upholstery doesn’t work, the problem becomes truly serious. Of course, you can take the furniture to a dry cleaner and not worry about the details, but not everyone has that option, so alternative solutions need to be found.
Modern technologies provide us with a huge selection of different stain removers: expensive and cheap, imported and domestic, for fabrics and for leather. Therefore, choosing a suitable product shouldn’t be difficult, but preparing for cleaning will require much more time. Before tackling the stains, it’s necessary to thoroughly vacuum the sofa to avoid streaks. These streaks form because there’s dust present in the upholstery and upper layers of the filler. However, this only applies to sofas that have been in use for about a year or more, as the concentration of dust on new items does not reach critical levels. After removing the dust, you can proceed directly to stain removal by following the instructions for the chosen product.
